On February 12 2011, renowned Melbourne chef of Grossi Florentino restaurant Guy Grossi, conducted a very well attended master class on Mt Buller as part of the inaugural Summer School. Sumputous dishes based on rice and pasta were created by Grossi and his formidable team. Each gorgeous dish was presented on pristine porcelain tableware created by Wendy for the occassion. She designed the plates with a strip of etching which wraps around the rim and is called 'Buller'. Individually thrown in Southern Ice porcelain, the plates celebrate the meal. They are dishwasher and microwave safe and are now available at Craft Victoria, Melbourne or from Wendy's gallery at Studio KanderField, Mansfield.

Arts Victoria to film Wendy Jagger's 'From Scratch' Artist-in-Schools project at Mansfield Primary School

In an age where so many products in our daily life are mass produced, pre-prepared or packaged, it is essential for our children to understand and appreciate where things come from and how they are made. It makes one wonder how many items in a household are handmade or how many meals are made completely from scratch? How long is it since one turned over a food bowl and saw a maker's mark instead of a printed "Made in ….."?

So began my journey with the Artists-In-Schools program, which is supported by Arts Victoria and D.E.E.C.D. Fifty-two Grade 6 students were taught how to throw bowls on the potter's wheel. A celebration meal was prepared by the students and parents from produce from the school's ktichen garden and enjoyed from the beautiful bowls they created.

The project was such a success that Arts Victoria have commissioned Singing Bowl Media to make a short film of 'From Scratch', featuring several of the students in action, with interviews of the students, art teacher Lyn Gardiner and Wendy. Filming takes place in early June 2010.

'From Scratch' continues at the school, with this year's Grade 6 students and bowls created will be sold at Mansfield Primary School's Farmer's Market. Produce from the school's garden will be presented in the bowls. Funds from the sales will go towards the purchase of a new pottery wheel, and so the cycle continues!
